Week 13 Story: The Wise and the Foolish Jacky

Jacky was off on another moneymaking scheme, this time resorting to his world-renowned (so he thought) sales tactics, rather than some sort of half-bungled heist that V would have save him from, along with the score. Jacky considered him a man of many skills, whether it came to gunfights, bargaining, or simply being a man for the ladies. Today's adventure would put his brain to the test, truly gauging his ability to adapt to any situation.

He was on a trip to sell a weapons cache he and another mercenary had stumbled across in the Badlands, and so they had been hauling their separate crates in their vehicles back to Night City. Neither of them had a car big enough to haul the entire load, which is why they had decided to split it. The other mercenary was driving in front of Jacky while he tailed him, as the other guy had stronger weapons fitted onto his ride. Weapons would not be enough for these two to safely return to Night City with their treasure though.

The sun shining down on the dirt of the Badlands, the nameless mercenary saw a black glimmer on the horizon. As he got closer, he saw it was a Militech convoy, and pulled over, wanting to ask what they were doing so far out in the desert. One of the soldiers came up to him and said they'd been assigned a new mission to find a stash of legendary weapons, which was just over the ridge, and they were leaving as their trucks could not carry the entire load. Hearing this, the mercenary dumped his stash of weapons, hoping to find higher quality goods over the ridge. As he drove over the ridge out of Jacky's sight, an EMP went off, and the soldiers grabbed the mercenary and executed him while they stole his car for ammunition and fuel.

Jacky knew what was happening as soon as the other mercenary had been pulled over, and widened the gap between them so that the convoy would not focus on him. While they were focused on locking down the vehicle of the other guy, Jacky had parked his car behind another ridge, and snuck his way up to the crate of weapons that had been abandoned, and dragged it all the way back to his car. The wise Jacky knew that corporation-sponsored convoys loved to prey on unsuspecting mercs in the field, leaving the foolish mercenary without his life. Jacky hid behind the ridge with his second crate lashed haphazardly onto the hood of his car, and returned to Night City after the convoy had left. He reaped quite a hefty reward from the sale of his weapons, heading home with a big grin on his face as he couldn't wait to tell V about his latest misadventure.

The Badlands

Author's Note: This story is based off the Wise and the Foolish Merchant. In the original story, two merchants are traveling across the desert with goods to sell, and they are tricked by a demon into abandoning their water before making it out of the desert. I kept most elements of the story the same, but instead of abandoning water I had they simply carry their goods, and be attacked by humans rather than a demon.

  2. Hi Aaron! This story was very entertaining. In the story was the badlands a reference to Borderlands? That is what I first thought of when I read it. I think this was a good retelling of the merchant story. The only thing I would say is by changing it from them abandoning their water to them being attacked it kind of takes away from the original moral of the story.
